Europe has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to natural wonders and there's probably no better way to explore them than by motorhome. Motorhomes are so widely available to hire these days and are a practical, cost-effective alternative to flying and staying in hostels or hotels. For the budget traveller, they offer the perfect combination of mobility and comfort. The only question is, where do you go once you pick up your keys. You can literally pick a spot on the map and then navigate the way there. Or you could head for one of these outstanding areas of natural beauty.
1. Mont Blanc, France
Mont Blanc, meaning 'White Mountain', is Europe's highest peak at 15,781 feet (4,810m). Situated in the French Alps very close to the border with Italy, this legendary mountain is best visited by motorhome during the spring and summer months (April to September). The entire region is a delight to behold. Head for Chamonix to get close to the peak, then drive on to one of the numerous camping facilities in the area.
2. The Danube River
The mighty Danube deserves a mention as one of the greatest natural wonders of Europe. Originating in the Black Forest of Germany, this enormous waterway then snakes its way east for a distance of 1,771 miles (2,850km), passing through 10 countries and four major European capital cities before emptying into the Black Sea. With a motorhome under you, there's nothing stopping you from following the river all the way to the sea.
3. Matterhorn, Zermatt, Switzerland
Perhaps the archetype of an Alpine peak in shape and proportion, and the inspiration behind Toblerone's iconic chocolate, the Matterhorn is Switzerland's most awe-inspiring mountain. I'm not suggesting you attempt to scale it in your motorhome, unless that is you have a futuristic vehicle with wings on it. The peak itself is treacherous to climbers and many have died in the attempt. Leave the motorhome down the valley and take the train up to Zermatt, which will get you within eyeshot of the famous peak.
4. Masurian Lake District, Poland
It is a curious fact that Poland's Masurian Lake District is little known outside of Poland and yet is in the running to be one of the offical Seven Wonders of The Natural World. Occupying an area of roughly 20,000 square miles (52,000 sq km), it contains more than 2,000 lakes and offers an endless wealth of possibilities for the intrepid motorhome enthusiast.
5. The Fjords, Norway
If you ever wanted to see the incredible effect that glaciers have on mountainous terrain, there is no better destination than the Norwegian fjords. In geological history, vast glaciers carved their way through this mountainous region, melted into lakes and left jagged rocky formations behind them on a vast scale. The fjords are simply stunning and get my vote as Europe's greatest natural wonder.
